Breaking Free: Tony’s Path to Stability

Due to employment instability in recent years, Tony is currently rebuilding his life in a shelter.

Although he earns anywhere between $11 and $17/hour, he had been ordered to pay $700/month—nearly half his income—in child support. Despite his best efforts and his good relationship with his child’s mother, he simply could not keep up.

By the time we met Tony, he owed over $22,000 and was unemployed. This debt was crippling and affected his enthusiasm for work. It also caused various procedural difficulties, such as obtaining a driver’s permit.

We filed a petition for downward modification of child support, as the order was not based on the facts or the law and was a hindrance to Tony's relationship with his child’s family. We successfully modified the order and Tony now pays an amount that reflects his ability to pay. We also relieved the suspension on his driver’s permit, providing more flexibility in Tony’s job search.

Tony is nearing graduation from his program at our partner organization, The Bowery Mission. We’re glad we’ve been able to complement the Mission’s excellent work and ensure that Tony can move forward.
