From “Frozen” to Free: Henry’s Path to a Fresh Start

We first met Henry when he was living in a shelter. His driver’s license was suspended and his bank account was frozen, all because of a court clerk’s mistake.

Because the court failed to docket a court order, Henry was billed tens of thousands of dollars he did not owe to the State of New York. We immediately helped Henry clear the debt, lift the driver’s license suspension and unfreeze his bank account. We also helped him obtain some maintenance income.

Open Hands attorneys were the only ones who spoke truth into my heart.

In addition, we provided legal counsel with regard to his complex relationship with his ex-wife. Henry shares that when all he wanted to do was win, "Open Hands attorneys were the only ones who spoke truth into my heart."

Our legal fellow, Christine, notes a joie de vivre in Henry’s step. When she first began working with him, he was discouraged. However, he is now nearing graduation at our partner organization, The Bowery Mission, and looks forward to building a career in the arts.

He is thankful for our attorneys’ sound legal advice infused with wisdom and grace.
